The Most Christmasy Town in America
If you haven’t been to the Bavarian-style town of Leavenworth, WA you need to go check it out. We kicked off our holiday season with a trip to the number one Christmas town in the USA and were not disappointed.
The town is decorated to the max for the holidays starting the day after American Thanksgiving (at the end of November) and lasting well into the New Year. Every single shop, restaurant, hotel, and tree is covered in lights and decorations that turn on at 4pm everyday. We really enjoyed walking around and exploring the shops to do a little Christmas shopping.
Just outside of town you will find the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm, where they raise a herd of reindeer and host educational and interactive tours. We absolutely loved visiting with the reindeer and learning more about them. They are so soft, but watch out for those antlers! We had a few near misses as the eager reindeer came over to us for treats (provided on the tour).
Our biggest tip, especially during the holiday season, is to book your visit ahead of time and book early. We were told that it is impossible to get same day tickets at the door, and many people leave disappointed when they try to show up without a booking.
After our visit with Santa’s most important partners in transportation, it was time to head back into town for dinner. We were recommended a German restaurant at the visitor’s center that has a German chef on staff. They made a really nice schnitzel served with potato salad (what Jay had) and a chicken schnitzel salad (what I had). Paired with dinner, we also tried a mulled wine. It was delicious!
The town attracts visitors year-round with holiday events around Christmas, the third largest Oktoberfest in the US in the fall, and other festivals during the summer months. We can’t wait to go back to explore what more the area has to offer in another season.
