We went camping near Princeton, British Columbia and found a great cheap camping option at the Old Hedley Recreation Site. It only cost $15/night ($7.50 for seniors)! For us, this was a steal of a deal for camping in the Similkameen River Valley of the Okanagan Region of BC.
Where is this place?
The Old Headley West Recreation Site is located off highway 3 (the crowsnest highway) between Princeton and Hedley, BC on Old Hedley Rd. It was easily accessible with our 25’ travel trailer and the campsites were large and spacious. This campground operates on a first-come-first-served basis and a park ranger stops by each day to collect payment.
Amenities at Old Hedley West Rec Site
Amenities are few at this primitive camping site. There were a couple of outhouses/pit toilets, and each site had a picnic table and firepit. All trash must be packed out as there is no garbage service here, either. Overall, we found the campground to be well kept and clean.
Things to do at Old Hedley West Rec Site
The Similkameen River runs right along the banks and at certain times of the year it is possible to float down the river on water floaties. We had fun watching others do this and plan to go back with floaties to give it a try one day. Just down the road, within walking distance, is a haskap berry farm where we were able to stop in to buy some of these delicious fruits.
Camping at Old Hedley West was fantastic. The simplicity of the site made it easy for us to disconnect, unwind, and just have some fun hanging out. We will definitely be staying here again next time we travel to the Okanagan Valley.
Until next time, keep on living the life you’ve imagined!
